This started as a response to a comment in one of the recent threads, but it hit me that what I was saying got to the core of something that's been bugging me for a while. Quite a while.
The "here" in my title refers strictly to Street Prophets, not the world in general. So, please click on the link to this picture, and contemplate it for a minute. Then follow me across the jump.
I was talking to my mom yesterday, and one thing she told me about was having her gas tank broken into. Somehow, the police were able to apprehend (or whatever the precise procedure they used was) the thieves and my mom got her gas back. (The thieves also did some damage to the car in the process.) The police officer my mom spoke with mentioned that it’s becoming increasingly common for people to go around stealing gas out of other people’s cars, in some states it’s a much bigger problem than it is in California. Apparently, with SUV’s it’s common for people just to drill a hole in the gas tank itself. With gas prices the way they are, what else would you expect? I did a Google search on "gas theft," and got 662,000 hits. A couple more thoughts about this on the flip
I went to a concert of Handel and Purcell on Thursday, so Purcell's what you get to hear today. Enjoy the music, and usual, tell us what you're eating, drinking, doing.
Moved by Mrs Pastor, with apologies. Had some errands this afternoon, and like everything that involves kids, they took longer than anticipated.
Don't see the coffee out yet. We had a bunch of music videos with black guys recently. So, here's some Tracy Chapman for the female side of the equation. Catch the revolutionary spirit, and gab about what you ate/will eat, did/will do, and that which makes your utopian dreams soar...
I just came across a series of videos on life in Iraq today. I'm submitting this diary simply to increase their circulation. For those who observe Good Friday, these may make for occasions for meditation on a suffering world. I'll let the videos speak for themselves. I like the straightforward narration.
It's been a while since I've done one of these diaries, but for newcomers, my very first diary was one of these. So, share what you're reading these days.
Also, reminder about the book club. On April 2, appleblossombeck will lead the discussion of A Wizard of Earthsea and on May 7, Sister Quarterstaff of Undeclared Grace will lead the discussion of The Years of Rice and Salt. The latter book is apparently quite lengthy, so you probably want get a good head start.
Looks like we're set for the next three months. After the shuffle, this is the skinny. On Wednesday, April 2, appleblossombeck will lead the discussion of A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula LeGuin.
On May 7, Sister Quarterstaff of Undeclared Grace will lead the discussion of The Years of Rice and Salt by Kim Stanley Robinson. Finally, virgomusic will host the discussion of The Golden Compass by Philip Pullmann on June 4.
Jim Wallis has taken several lumps around here for his construct of the "secular left." People point to the strong organizations of the Religious Right, such as Focus on the Family or the Institute on Religion and Democracy and point out there really are no equivalent organizations advocating for the total secularization of society. One would be hard-pressed to make an argument that the Freedom from Religion Foundation has the kind of clout or influence that either of those other organizations do.
Please don't forget that lonespark will lead the discussion of Small Gods on March 5th. Ack! I still need to get my copy.
I'm torn between several titles, but I think I'm going to re-nominate Robert McAfee Brown's Religion and Violence. Of the books I'm mulling over, it speaks most directly to issues of faith and politics. Please choose one book you'd like to nominate for the book club (of course you can recommend as many as you like to promote literature you think is great, just make it clear which is the nomination and which are recommendations, please). Depending on how the votes turn out, we'll settle the readings for April, April and May, or possibly April through June.
That's German for "Coffee Hour without Mahanoy." Well, maybe he'll show up later. He asked me to post today, as he's busy with some meeting or another. Been trying to figure out what music to select. So much out there. Looks like it's going to be the Cocteau Twins. My roommate in high school dug them. Couple of videos on the flip.
So, what are you doing, eating today? That's what we talk about here, right?
